ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre Organised Five Days Special Training Programme on Advancement in Seed Testing for North Eastern Hill Region     

 

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre organised five days special National Training programme on Advancement in Seed Testing for North Eastern Hill Region (3rd to 7th December, 2018).  The programme was sponsored by National Seed Research and Training Centre, Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Varanasi.

The training programme was inaugurated by Shri Ksh. Bhabananda Singh, Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha as Chief Guest in presence of Dr. Arvind N. Kumar Singh, Director, National Seed Research and Training Centre, Varanasi, Prof. J.M. Laishram, Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU, Imphal, Dr. N. Prakash, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam and Dr. I. Meghachandra Singh, Course Director and Joint Director, ICAR, Manipur Centre on the dais.

Shri Bhabananda Singh opined that there is a need to implement a policy for utilisation of paddy fallows and new technologies so that  farmers can get more income  since  area under arable land in Manipur is decreasing while most of paddy land remains fallow after harvesting and  the GDP of agriculture is decreasing in an alarming rate. Speaking as the president of the function, N. Prakash, the Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, said that the north eastern region still lacks quality seeds for agriculture. Dr. Arvind N. Kumar Singh, Director, National Seed Research and Training Centre, Varanasi thanked the centre for hosting this special training programme. One training manual was also released on that day. Dr. I. Meghachandra Singh briefed regarding the essence of such trainings in the NEH Region as there are no formal seed quality control systems in most of the states in the region. Dr.S.S.Roy. Senior Scientist (Hort) pronounced vote of thanks.

In the valedictory function. Prof. L. Nabachandra Singh, HOD of Agronomy, College of Agriculture appealed the trainees to utilise the knowledge gained in the training programme in their respective states.

The training was attended by 32 officials from all over the region including one from Delhi. Resource persons were from ICAR, CAU and National Seed Research and Training Centre.  Many recent applications including use of foldscope, microsatellite markers, etc. were trained.
