Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan Week celebrated by ICAR Research Complex, Umiam, Meghalaya

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya celebrated “Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan Week” from 26th-29th December 2015 to commemorate the birth anniversaries of two former Prime Ministers of India, Shri Atal Behari Bajpayee ji and late Shri Chudhury Charan Singh ji in view of their enormous and valuable contributions towards promoting the application of science and technology for the development of agriculture, so as to bring a sustainable liveliohood among the farming community of the country. The event celebrated by organizing various technology demonstration-cum- training programmes and distribution of improved agricultural inputs among farmers along with  famers- scientists interactions, etc.

26th December, 2015 (Saturday)
On 26th December, 2015; a technology demonstration- cum- training programme was organized at Smit Village in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. More than forty farmers from three nearby villages namely Mowmothur, Dirling, and Smit attended the programme. Participating in the programme, the scientists from ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Umiam, Dr. Arnab Sen, Pr. Scientist & Head (Animal Health & Production), Dr. A.K. Mohanty, Pr. Scientist (Agril. Extension) and Dr. M. Prabha Devi, Scientist (Soil Science) highlighted about the importance and benefits of improved technologies in agriculture, adoption of the region specific suitable scientific technologies developed by the institute. The Chairman of a local NGO Rilum Foundation Mr. B. I. Nongbri and Village Headman, Smit Mr. R. Kharumnuid also graced the occasion. An open discussion was also made regarding the problems faced by the farmers such as input availability, pest and disease management, utilization of farm machineries, soil health management and marketing of farm produce etc. Later, forty quintals of quality potato seeds (var. Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Megha) procured from Mylliem Potato Farmers Club (a registered potato seed grower group) were distributed among the farmers along with technology demonstrations. Farmers were also encouraged to produce potato seeds with a pledge to make the village a Potato seed Village.

28th December, 2015 (Monday)
On 28th December, 2015; a technology demonstration- cum- training programme was organized at Margnar area of Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi distric of Meghalaya. More than 100 farmers from eight different villages of Marngar namely Lalumpam, Nongang, Borgang, Purangang, Joigang, Nalapara, Borkhatsari and Marngar including some NGO personnel attended the programme along with Mr. Jiten Sohkawai, Head Man, Nalapara Village and Mr. Pravin Sewale, Secretary, NGO-Seva Bharati, Meghalaya.

The start of the event was marked by visit to farmers’ field by Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya along with team of scientists (Dr. A.K Mohanty, Dr. M. Prabha Devi, Dr. J.P. Tyagi, Dr. N. Deshmukh, and Dr. Ashok Kumar) and farmers to know the strengths and opportunities of the village for the agricultural development and discussed about the farmers’ problems related to farming. Later chairing the programme, Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director remembered the contributions of two former Prime Ministers Shri Atal Behari Bajpayee ji and late Shri Chudhury Charan Singh ji for the well being of the farming community of the nation and highlighted the importance of celebration of “Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan Week”. He strongly emphasized upon the importance of scientific approach in agriculture and the potentialities of horticultural crops like ginger, turmeric, drumstick, vegetables and Muga Silk in the region. He also stressed upon the conservation of valuable indigenous germplasms, resource conservation technologies, enhancing oilseed and pulses production in NEH region and technology led improved farming to bring second green revolution in this region. Initially Dr. A.K Mohanty, Principal Scientist (Agril. Extension) in his welcome remarks, stressed on the need for technology outreach to the farmers, need for adoption of innovative technologies developed by the research institutes. He encouraged the farmers to introduce zero tillage mustard/ field pea/ lentil cultivation in the rice fallow for increasing the cropping intensity and to enhance the production under oilseed and pulses so as to ameliorate the livelihood status of the farmers. On this occasion, two hundred back yard poultry chicks (Vanaraja breed) and forty (40) quintals of potato seeds (cv. Kufri Jyoti) were distributed among the farmers along with technology demonstrations.

On 29th December, 2015; a Farmers- Scientists Interaction was organised at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam. About 60 (sixty) farmers from different villages of the state and scientists from various divisions of the institute attended the programme. At the outset, welcoming the gatherings Dr. A.K Tripathi, Head Social Science, ICAR-RC for NEH Region and Acting Director, ATARI, Zone III highlighted the importance of organizing Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan Week, through use of scientific approach in agriculture and the need for the cooperation and pro-activeness of the farmers and the scientists for the agricultural development of the region.

Highlighting the importance of Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan Week”; Director In-Charge, Dr. N.S. Azad Thakur urged the farmers for application of science led technologies in agriculture to bring second green revolution in NEH region of the country. In his address, he stressed upon the need for the adoption of improved  technologies like Integrated farming System (IFS), Integrated Pest management (IPM), Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), Integrated Water Management (IWM), Organic farming system, Climate smart technologies, mechanization in agriculture and post harvesting technologies etc. for a better tomorrow.

A Farmers- Scientists interaction was held discussing various agriculture related problems like availability of quality inputs, disease and pest management, marketing issues etc. faced by the farmers for which instant solutions were provided by the expert scientists on a common platform. This was followed by distribution of seeds of different vegetables namely Radish, Coriander, Spinach, Garden pea etc., among the farmers along with their technology knowhow.

Lastly, extending vote of thanks Dr. R. K Singh, Head, Agriculture Engineering, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Umiam asked the farmers to come forward for maximum utilization of the research based agricultural technologies evolved by this institute along with agro-advisory services. The programme ended with the visit of the farmers to the various research and demonstration fields of the institute.
