KVK ICAR Celebrates “Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan” Week 

 

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (ICAR Sikkim Centre), East Sikkim, Ranipool initiated week long programme on “Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan” on December 23, 2015 at Timpyem and December 26, 2015 at Tirkutam villages, East Sikkim which will continue upto December 29, 2015. The programme was undertaken to further strengthen and integrate the role of farmers as well as the science to consolidate the benefits achieved under Green Revolution into Evergreen Revolution. The programme was initiated on the birth anniversary of Ex Prime Minister, Govt. of India Late Shri Chaudhary Charan Singh on December 23, 2015 every year. A Farmers - Scientists interaction was organized in which total 34 nos. of progressive tribal farmers of Timpyem and 30 nos. of progressive tribal farmers of Tirkutam villages of East Sikkim participated.

 

 

The programme was chaired by Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre.  Addressing the gathering he briefed on importance of organic cultivation of vegetables in rice fallow. He also encouraged the farmers to undertake integrated farming system for the sustainability of the soil as well as the animals.  He urged the farmers towards establishing the sources of organic inputs within the farm to reduce dependence on external inputs. He also invited farmers to visit ICAR Sikkim Centre, Tadong for understanding the technologies and ongoing research activities.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Program Coordinator (I/c) and Senior Scientist (Agronomy), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre briefed on organic cultivation of field crops in rice-fallow. He encouraged the farmers to implement the improved production technology of Rabi crops for sustainable farming and further detailed the value of vermicompost as sources of organic nutrition to the crops in the state.

Dr. N.J. Singh, SMS (Plant Protection) detailed the major insect pests and diseases of Rabi crops in Sikkim conditions and their organic management practices. He urged the farmers to use organic inputs for managing the insects in vegetables and other crops for increasing productivity.

Shri Boniface Lepcha, SMS (Horticulture) interacted with farmers for their technical problems of low production and productivity from the farming system under organic condition and also briefed the farmers about improved production technology of Rabi vegetables which can empower the farming community and their livelihood status.

Dr. H. Kalita, Principal Scientist (Entomology) detailed the major insect pests and diseases of Rabi crops in Sikkim conditions and their organic management practices. He urged the farmers to use organic inputs for managing the insects in vegetables and other crops for increasing productivity.

Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Senior Scientist (Animal Reproduction) interacted with the farmers and suggested methods for maintaining the hygienic housing which is most imperative of the poultry management practices. He also emphasized that Ranikhet disease is the most important disease under free range poultry farming.  It was suggested that night shelter should have good ventilation, adequate light and protection from predators.

Dr. Brijesh Kumar, Scientist (Animal Reproduction) informed the gathering about different types of parasites, diseases and their symptoms in cattle and pig and their management. He suggested the integrated approach for prevention and early cure of the cattle and pig affected due to the various diseases.

Shri Shaon Kumar Das, Scientist (Soil Science) highlighted the importance of integrated organic nutrient management in integrated farming system. At the end of the programme Ms Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Agril. Extension) proposed the vote of thanks. Miss Meena Pradhan, SRF (NICRA) assisted in the smooth execution of the programme.

Later on, field demonstration on garden pea cultivation under zero till rice-fallow was also conducted at farmer’s field in Tirkutam village.
