ICAR- NOFRI Trained Tribal Farmers of East Sikkim on IPM of Large Cardamom
ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute (ICAR-NOFRI) organized one day training program at Tadong to strengthen the tribal farmers of East Sikkim on Integrated Pest Management of large cardamom on Validation and promotion of IPM in large cardamom and ginger sponsored by ICAR-NCIPM, New Delhi under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) on 4th July, 2016. During the program total of 15 progressive farmers of Nandok, Martam Thanka Busty and Upper Sirwani participated and benefitted with the technical know-how and various necessary inputs like large cardamom suckers, spray machines, organic pesticides (neem oil, copper oxychloride etc), organic biofertilizers, plastic pipes that were distributed among the farmers. In the inaugural session, Dr R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-National Organic farming Research Institute briefed about the activities of the Centre and the technologies developed for the benefit of the farmers. In the technical session he stressed on management of soil health for increasing large cardamom production and by adopting the technologies developed by ICAR-NOFRI for large cardamom improvement. He emphasized on the adoption of integrated farming system including livestock components along with large cardamom cultivation. He discussed regarding organic nutrient management in large cardamom.
Dr. H. Kalita, Principal Scientist (Entomology) detailed the organic pest and disease management in large cardamom. He stressed on the importance of regular visit and proper monitoring of farms in organic production systems for better management of insect pests.
Organic large cardamom production along with commercial nursery raising techniques for livelihood improvement of tribal farmers was also discussed by Mr. Boniface Lepcha, SMS (Horticulture).
