A Diagnostic Visit to a Progressive Farmers Citrus Orchard

Khasi mandarin is one of the most important fruit crop of Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh. But due to lack of knowledge and proper information, the farmers after planting the fruit tree saplings don’t practice any after care operations. On 29th November 2016, a progressive farmer Mr. S. Tamai from Tambro village came to our KVK office and complained decline symptoms in his 4 year old citrus orchard.

So on 25th November 2016, a team of KVK officials Mr. Senpon Ngomle, SMS (PP) and Ms. Rebecca Eko, SMS (Horti.) visited his orchard. After thorough inspection and diagnose the symptoms, we found out that the orchard was infected by citrus trunk borer, collar rot, infestation of parasitic plant (Loranthus) and deficiency of micro-nutrient (especially zinc). Hence to mitigate his problem and provide instant relief for citrus trunk borer, soil drenching of 0.5% of Dichlovos 76 EC was applied after cleaning 1 m area around the tree basin and ask the farmers to repeat the process at weekly interval. For controlling collar rot and other fungal diseases, Bordeaux mixture was prepared and its application was done both on the infected as well as on the healthy trees. We also recommended him to maintain clean orchard by removing the parasitic plants and plastering the cut area with Bordeaux paste.

Since neglectosis is the root cause of all the ailments, so weexplained him the various care and management practices, he should adopt in citrus garden throughout the year.

At the end of the programme, he really appreciated KVK’s efforts to provide aid in a very short span of time.
