Knowledge input for farmers

Vanaraja for backyard poultry: Vanaraja is a dual purpose multi-coloured bird with attractive feather colour pattern and better survivability suitable for backyard farming in rural and peri urban areas, which has been developed by the Project Directorate on Poultry, ICAR, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Due to its moderate weight and long shanks, the bird is able to protect itself from predators. It is adaptable to backyard scavenging system of rearing with better immune status against common poultry diseases. Vanaraja male attain moderate body weight at 8 weeks of under regular feeding system. They reached body weight of 2.0 kg by months and 3.5 kg by 8-9 months age. The hen will lay on an average 150 eggs in a year and the colour of egg is brown.

Mushroom cultivation: Oyster mushroom is a highly nutritional and a profitable crop that can be grown in a wide range of temperature. It is mainly grown on paddy straw under indoor condition which grows well in the temperature range between 18 -30 °C and relative humidity of 80 – 85 %. The climatic condition of Assam, especially Barak Valley region is highly suitable for oyster mushroom cultivation and availability of straw in the valley offer good prospects for its cultivation.

Protected cultivation of vegetables under shade net house

Background in which the technology was tested: Production and productivity of vegetable crops is low in Hailakandi due to diverse climatic constraints like high rainfall during rainy season, moisture stress during summer season, poor in soil nutrient content due to losses because of leaching etc. The protected cultivation may be the appropriate alternative to modify the affect of above factors as per the requirement of crops to realize its maximum production potential.
Detail of technology intervention: Based on the survey of vegetable cultivation status of the district, KVK Hailakandi introduced the technology of low-cost shade net house where four numbers of low-cost shade net houses were constructed with locally available low cost materials like bamboo, timber wood and tublex net (75%) in Durgimara village for year round cultivation of high value vegetables like tomato, capsicum, brinjal, cucumber and chili.
Mode of technology demonstration: Nos. of awareness camp, trainings and method demonstration was organized for the benefit of the farmers and rural youth as well as to popularize the technology. All types of advisory services was provided for easy adoption of the said technology
Results obtained and horizontal spread: Farmers shown keen interest in adopting low-cost shade net house technology in their farm to cultivate, high value vegetables and were willing to replicate the technology in several places in the district. Farmers were convinced that low-cost shade net house technology could be more economical when off season vegetables were grown and used for raising nursery of vegetables, fruits and flowers in adverse weather. Almost all the vegetable farmers in Durgimara village and nearby villages are now interested in cultivating vegetables in shade net house.

Composite Fish culture

Background in which the technology was tested: There lies a great potential of Composite Fish Culture for livelihood improvement by increasing income and employment generation for rural youth in the district owing to the abundant water bodies and small to big size pond in every household. The main motto of this intervention was to minimize the gap between the demand and production of fishes.
Detail of technology intervention: For demonstration of the technology in the farmer’s field, 20000 fingerlings and 5000 advanced fingerling were distributed to 17 farmers during the technology demonstration. Each of the farmers had a maximum pond size of 0.13 ha and minimum of 0.06 ha. All these farmers were selected from Durgimara and Chainubasti village. Entire package from pond management, growth and health care to harvesting was successfully demonstrated. Farmers were also supplied with fish feed supplements.
Mode of technology demonstration: The technology was demonstrated through OFT mode. Altogether 04 Nos of training programmes were conducted under NICRA on Composite Fish Culture benefitting 68 numbers of farmers. During the training program special emphasis were given on best management practices like feed and feeding and also on effective utilization of available water resources.
Results obtained and horizontal spread: With the intervention done by KVK Hailakandi, the farmers have not only realized the production potential of their pond with adoption of Composite Fish Culture, but also the science there in the technology. Now with this intervention, farmers from the surrounding villages also have started visiting KVK office asking for technical guidance from KVK side in shifting from traditional method of fish farming to scientific fish farming practices. One of the beneficiaries Shri Jalandhar Raajbhor has harvested 250 kg of fishes and earned Rs.27500.00 investing only Rs. 15611.00.
