Women Cell of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam celebrated ‘International Women’s Day’ on 8th March, 2021

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The Women Cell of ICAR-RC for NEHR, Umiam marked the day with celebrations at the M. S. Swaminathan Hall of the Institute. Dr. K. Puro, Senior Scientist, Animal Health and I/c Chairperson of Women Cell in her welcome address highlighted the role of women in the society and said that the female section of the society should raise their voice against any injustice.In unison with the theme for the year 2021 “Women in leadership; Achieving an equal future in a covid-19 world”it indicates that a challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change.

The day was celebrated by appreciating the efforts of some women agriprenuers under the ICAR theme for the year 2021 on “Women Leadership in Agriculture: Entrepreneurship, Equity and Empowerment (3 E’s)”. Four women farmers from Meghalaya were felicitated for their undying spirit and effort in agriculture especially during the Covid 19 pandemic situationviz., Smt. Rosemary Khongrymmai,Bhoirymbong village (Herbal value addition); Smt. SavialinLyngdoh, Nalapara village (Integrated farming system); Smt. EdildorisSuphai (Agriculture produce marketing); Smt. Isabella Pakma, Mawkyndeng village (Food processing).

Dr. R. Laha, I/c Director, ICAR RC NEHR Umiam,speaking on the occasion said that all women should enjoy womanhood and being a woman, as there is a uniqueness about the fairer sex that holds them above in the society.

Mrs.Ioolang War, Assistant Director, Dept. of Social Welfare, Govt. of Meghalaya & Member Secretary, Meghalaya Sate Commission for Women (MSCW), graced the occasion as the Special Invited Guest. Addressing the gathering, she highlighted the laws and the legal rights of women in the society and the state commission’s various schemes that offers legal protection for women. She also emphasized that gender parity was not only about women claiming their own rights, but more about self-empowerment, self-embolden and consciously living their rights in helping the society as a whole irrespective of gender.

The programme witnessed active participation in celebrating International Women’s Day by the scientific, technical, administrative and field staff- a glimpse
