Women Cell of ICAR-RC-NEHR, Umiam celebrates International Women’s Day

 

The International Women’s Day was celebrated at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on 8th March, 2018. It was organized by the Women Cell of the Institute on this year’s global theme “Time is now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”. Dr. K. Puro, Senior Scientist & Vice-Chairperson of Women Cell, ICAR-RC-NEHR, Umiam welcomed the gathering and expressed that the occasion was celebrated to express respect, appreciation and love to the whole women fraternity. She further added that it is the duty of each woman to uplift other women and bridge the gap between the rural and the urban communities. Dr. Pratibha Kulshrestha, former Professor of History, Delhi University, highlighted the role played by women in today’s society. She noted that societies flourish well where women are given equal respect and are not taken for granted. Women today have equal potential and, therefore, must realize their strengths and abilities to step out and contribute to the society. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bhavna C. Soso, Medical officer, CPGS, CAU enlightened the audience on women menopausal health, and how a woman needs to take care of her body. Mrs. Swapna Deb Kanungo, Branch Manager, SBI ICAR Branch, Barapani, in her address stressed on the fact that as far as possible women should put an effort to get basic knowledge about banking so that she is self-dependent. As a banker, she exhorted the audience on smart savings, stating that the future security does not depend on the person’s earnings, but more on how diligently he/she saves. Schemes provided by State Bank of India especially for women customers. She also emphasized that gender equality was not only about women claiming their own rights, but more about self-empowerment and consciously living their rights in helping the society as a whole irrespective of gender.  Chief Administrative Officer of ICAR, Umiam Mr. K. K. Kulshrestha also addressed the gathering and appreciated the efforts and contribution of ICAR women. He said that this year’s theme of International Women’s Day is apt, and there is an urgent need to uplift the status of women in the society. Director in-charge Dr. K. K. Baruah, also emphasized the need of education and awareness of women rights in the society. The programme witnessed active participation from the scientific, technical, administrative and field staff. The audience was also entertained with musical items.
