Two days Training programme on “Backyard poultry farming for socio-economic upliftment of tribal farmers in Mizoram” at ICAR, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib

The ICAR Mizoram Centre, Kolasib organized two days training on “Backyard poultry farming for socio-economic upliftment of tribal farmers in Mizoram” during 11-12 March 2021. The programme was organized in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya and ICAR Directorate on Poultry Research, Hyderabad. The training was inaugurated by Dr. Lalthlangliana, Deputy Commissioner, Kolasib District in the presence of Dr. I Shakuntala, Joint Director, ICAR Mizoram Centre, Kolasib, Dr. Engkunga Chhangte, District Veterinary Officer, Kolasib, Dr. Hmingthanzuala, DIPRO, Kolasib, scientists from ICAR Mizoram Centre, other officials and farmers from Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit districts of Mizoram.

During the inauguration, Dr. I Shakuntala in her welcome and introductory speech highlighted the main idea behind the training programme. She expressed that backyard poultry rearing can be dependable and sustainable source of income for the farmers while mentioning the importance of having knowledge on scientific management practices for successful rearing of poultry. Further she mentioned that several factors such as availability of quality chicks, feed, management and marketing that determine the outcome of farming venture. She urged all the participants to learn all the important aspects of backyard poultry rearing during the two days training programme. Dr. Engkunga Chhangte appreciated ICAR Mizoram Centre for conducting such training for the farmers and mentioned the importance of making a profit out of any venture and expressed the importance of rearing poultry in a scientific manner to enhance the profit.

Dr. Lalthlangliana also appreciated all the work undertaken by the ICAR Mizoram Centre by highlighting the works on conservation of fishes, rice improvement, mushroom cultivation, maize promotion, popcorn evaluation and livestock improvements. “God created human to be self sufficient and it is the responsibility of human to work and become self sufficient” he said. He expressed the importance of learning the scientific management of poultry rearing to become successful and mentioned that the manual generated out of the training will be very useful for not only the participants but the farming communities of the state

A total of 150 farmers from three districts (Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit) participated in the training and several inputs including 3000 chicks, 15 quintals of poultry feed, feeder and waterer, medicines and vaccines were distributed to the farmers during the training programme. Experts from ICAR Mizoram Centre, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and Veterinary department delivered lectures during the two days training programme. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Lalhruaipuii, Scientist (Vety. Micro.), Shri. P.L. Lalrinsanga, Scientist (Aquaculture), Dr. Lungmuana, Scientist (Soil Science) and Dr. Jeetendra Kumar Soni, Scientist (Agronomy).
