Training program on “Development of gardening skill among the unemployed rural youth” under AICRP (Floriculture)

  A nine days training programme on “Development of Gardening Skill Among The  Unemployed Rural Youth” was conducted by the Division of System Research and Engineering, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam during 22nd to 30th March, 2021  under AICRP on Floriculture.

The training programme was intended to impart theoretical knowledge and practical skills on production techniques of commercially important ornamental crops both in open and protected conditions including seasonal and perennial flowers, foliages and climbers, management of lawns. Thirty unemployed rural youths from different divisions of the institute and nearby villages had successfully participated in the training programme. During the entire training, various experts from the institute were involved in delivering desired gardening skills to the trainees. In addition to the theoretical lectures, practical technical know-how on lay out, nursery management, propagation, training and pruning, integrated pests-diseases management, post harvest management were demonstrated

An educational trip was made to various landscaping of Shillong city such as Lady Hydari Park, Wards Lake and Golf Link to give exposure to the trainees on the landscape management and different garden components It was the first exposure for majority of the participants to the aesthetic components of horticulture and found that the training enriched their skills and knowledge on ornamental flowers, foliage, climbers and trees in terms of production and management aspects.
