Training-cum-Demonstration Programme on Scientific Beekeeping at Umiarong village of Ri-Bhoi District

    A training-cum-demonstration programme on “Scientific Beekeeping” was organized at Umiarong village of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya on 15th March, 2021 by the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Umiam, Meghalaya under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP).  A total of 28 farmers including interested beekeepers participated the programme.  The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. Tasvina R. Borah, Scientist (Plant Pathology), Division of Crop Science. The day long training-cum-demonstration elaborated on “Scientific Beekeeping” for livelihood improvement of farmers as well as scope for entrepreneurship development on this potential venture for unemployed rural youth in Meghalaya. Various scientific speeches were given on beekeeping including hands on demonstrations and problem associated with the beekeeping by Dr. Sandip Patra, Scientist (Agricultural Entomology), Division of Crop Science. Various scientific accessories related to beekeeping such as hives (including all inner parts), bee veils, knife, extractor, excluder sheet and gloves were exhibited and explained the function of each to the farmers/beekeepers by Dr. Patra.  A scientists and farmers/beekeepers interaction was a major part of the programme, where the queries of the farmers/beekeepers were answered by the scientists. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Tasvina R. Borah, Scientist (Plant Pathology). The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sandip Patra, Scientist (Agricultural Entomology), Dr. Tasvina R. Borah, Scientist (Plant Pathology), Dr S. Ruth Assumi, Scientist (Horticulture) and Dr. Pampi Paul, Scientist (Extension) of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya.
