Training-Cum-Input Distribution Programme on “Construction of Low Cost Polyhouse and Introduction of Pro-Tray Healthy Tomato Seedling Production Technology”

19th February, 2021: One-day training cum input distribution programme on “Construction of low cost polyhouse and introduction of pro-tray healthy tomato seedling production technology” was organised at project site, Kalibari Village, Shella Bholaganj Block, East Khasi Hill District of Meghalaya on 19th February 2021 under NICRA-SCSP project. Twenty-five marginal vegetable growers attended the programme. At the first phase, five progressive youths has been selected for introduction of protected cultivation technology at project site, Kalibari Village.Three low cost polyhouse house with size of 48x21x7 feet were constructed for cultivation and production of high yielding varieties of tomato (Arka Rashak) chili (Arka Meghana) and cucumber (Namdhari NS 404). The programme began with Er H. Dayananda Singh, (Scientist, Farm Machinery) briefing about the knowhow on construction of low cost Polyhouse including site selection, layout, feasible design, frame supports from wind, orientations for harnessing sufficient sunlight, maintenance of protected structures to increase durability. Later, Dr A Ratankumar Singh and Dr (Mrs) Tasvina R Borah, Scientist, Plant Pathology also conducted hands on demonstration to raise disease free tomato and chilli seedling in plastic pro-tray using coco peat as growing medium, mixing of vermicompost, bio control agents and fertilizer with medium, controlled moistening of medium, seeds sowing techniques, covering of pro tray with plastic sheet. In addition, Dr (Ms) Pampi Paul, (Scientist, Agril. Extension) highlighted the role of protected cultivation in upliftment of socio-economic conditions of low income vegetable growers in rainfed agriculture. She also visualised the feasibility and potential income generation from protected cultivation technology of tomato, chilli and cucumber during rainy and winter season. The critical inputs like UV-protected polyethylene sheets, shade net (50% shade), biocontrol agents, bio fertilizer, HYV seeds: tomato and chili, vermi-compost, coco peat, plastic pro-tray were distributed to selected youths. The programme was organised and coordinated by team of scientists, Dr A Ratankumar (Scientist, Plant Pathology), Dr Tasvina R Borah (Scientist, Plant Pathology) Er H. Dayananda Singh, (Scientist, Farm Machinery and Power) and Dr Pampi Paul, (Scientist, Agril. Extension) of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya.
