Three Days Training and Awareness Programme on Scientific Pig Farming for Farmers under Biotech-KISAN Project Organised by KVK Ri-Bhoi, Umiam, Meghalaya, Concluded.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ri-Bhoi, Umiam, Meghalaya successfully completed three days Awareness and training Program on ‘Scientific Pig Farming for farmers under Biotech-KISAN (Krishi Innovation Science Application Network) Project entitled “Establishment of Biotech-KISAN Hub at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya ”, sponsored by DBT, Govt. of India, in Cluster III (Mawbri and Thadnongiaw villages)’ from 29th-31st August, 2019 at Mawbri Village Community Hall. A total of 30 numbers of farmer beneficiaries under the project attended this training. Besides, the Mahila Kisan Biotech Fellows of these two villages and secretary of the village also participated in this training. During this training program Mr. Bankit Kupar Mukhim, SMS (Fishery) and Co-Principal Investigator told about introduction and objectives of the project as increased piglet/pig production, hygienic pig rearing and value addition of pork products. Dr Samir Das, Scientist and Co-PI, and Dr. Anand deliver lectures on Public Health importance of pig diseases and Housing and feeding in pig farming, respectively. Dr. R. Laha, Principal Scientist and Hub Facilitator, Biotech-KISAN project delivered lectures on Pig parasites and Swine Fever diseases, their symptoms, diagnosis and control. The valedictory program was attended by Dr. R. Laha, Principal Scientist and Hub Facilitator, Biotech-KISAN project, Dr. M Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist and Head KVK Ri Bhoi and Principal Investigator of the Project, Mr. Bankit Kupar Mukhim, SMS (Fishery) and Co-Principal Investigator and all project staff. In his speech Dr. Islam highlighted about initiation of the project in this Cluster as well as formation of other Clusters of the project in this aspirational district Ri Bhoi of the State Meghalaya. He urged the farmers to make this Cluster as a model pig village and to take pig farming as a full time venture and not as part time job so improvement of their livelihood. Dr. Laha in his speech expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the entire team members, PIs and CoPIs for organizing this training successfully and thanks the beneficiaries for their interest to undertake this training and Headmans/Secretaries of the villages for their cooperation for successful completion of this training. He expressed his desire that piglets should be maintained in clean shed and no piglet should die. Also thanks Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya for providing facilities. Inputs in the form of Pig Feed were distributed to the farmers of both the villages.
