News feed of stakeholder interface meeting on pig value chain and pork marketing held on 16th March 2021

       One day interface meeting on “Stakeholder interface meeting on pig value chain and pork marketing” was organized on 16th March 2021 at DNB Conference Hall, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam. The interface meeting was held under NASF project “Pork Marketing Chains in North-East India for Sustainable Livelihood of Tribal Women (Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland)”. The objective of the meeting is to identify the current pig value chain as well as pork marketing system and to formulate policy framework for effective supply-chain management in the piggery sector in Meghalaya. Different pig value chain actors viz. input suppliers, pig farmers, pig aggregator, middleman, butcher, pork retailer and pork processing entrepreneur are participated in the meeting besides institutional and extension service agencies like ICAR scientists, professor, NGOs, NABARD, CPGS-AS CAU, Amity University, Noida and State Animal husbandry and Veterinary Department. After brief inaugural program, Dr. G. Kadirvel organizing secretary and centre principal investigator of the project presented current status of pig production, productivity in Meghalaya followed by Dr. Mahua Battacherjee Professor, Amity University Noida and Principal investigator of the project elaborated the project progress till date for initiating the discussion. Each value chain actor briefly explained the current status and problems facing in pig value chain including pig farmers, input supplier, entrepreneur, retailer, butcher, pig aggregator and middleman, etc. Accordingly, the experts and state veterinary department answered all the respective queries and problems. The Deputy Director, Regional Pig Breeding Farm, Kyrdemkulai, State Veterinary Department explained the schemes including piggery mission and other support mechanisms to strengthen the pig value chain. After thorough discussion with all stakeholders effective value chain management strategies was made and accordingly proceeding report was prepared. Finally, Dr. K.K. Baruah Principal Scientist & HOD Division of Animal & Fisheries Sciences, ICAR Umiam briefed the concluding remark on the program and the program was ended by Dr. S. Deori, Scientist ICAR Umiam with vote of thanks.
