Training-cum-Awareness on Scientific Beekeeping for the farmers of Meghalaya

 

A programme on “Scientific Beekeeping” was organized at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya on 14th December, 2018 by the Division of Crop Protection, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam for the farmers of Meghalaya under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP).  A total of 25 participants from different villages (Mawlai, Byrwa, Mawphlang, Synnei, Donkiingding, Nongjrong) of Meghalaya benefitted from the programme.The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. Sandip Patra, Scientist (Entomology), Division of Crop Protection. Dr. G. T. Behere, Principal Scientist & Head, Division of Crop Protection emphasized on importance of scientific beekeeping for sustainable farming system. Dr. Pankaj Baiswar, Senior Scientist (Pathology) delivered motivating speech towards beekeepers of Meghalaya. The day long training elaborated on “Scientific Beekeeping” for livelihood improvement of farmers in Meghalaya.  Various scientific speeches were given on beekeeping including hands on demonstrations and problem associated with the Beekeeping, by the scientists of the ICAR.

Various inputs related to beekeeping such as modern bee boxes, bee veils, extractor, bee colonies and other accessories were provided to the beekeepers.  A scientists and beekeepers interaction was a major part of the programme, where the queries of the beekeepers were answered by the scientists.  The training and hands on demonstration assured that the beekeepers to get the best out of art of beekeeping. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sandip Patra, Dr. G. T. Behere, and Dr. H. Rymbai of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya.
