KVK Ri-Bhoi Organized Vocational Training Programme on “Scientific Bee Keeping”

The ICAR-KVK Ri-Bhoi successfully organized a week long vocational training programme on “Scientific Bee keeping” during 31st to 6th February, 2017. Around 16 rural youths and farmers were selected from Umeit village of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya for the said training programme which was selected by Mrs. Mousumi G Das, SMS Plant Protection as a course director of the programme. The basic objective of the programme was to encourage the farmers’ to take up Bee keeping as an enterprise through adoption of Scientific Bee keeping which is a very profitable venture as an allied enterprise. Through Scientific Bee keeping a farmer can earn Rs 600 per kg to Rs 700 per kg from selling honey alone which can help to generate employment and income. Accordingly, during the programme two exposure trips to Rural Resource Training Centre (RRTC), Umran and to a progressive farmers farm Mr.K.D Kharkrang, of Umeit village were undertaken. A practical session on Bee keeping including scientific extraction of honey was also conducted. The selection of ideal apiary, proper maintenance of the apiary and the benefits of Bee hive products in the polyhouse were thoroughly discussed with trainees using PPTs and film shows.

The seven days Training programme encouraged the participants for taking up Bee keeping as an enterprise. The visit to RRTC, Umran gave a new idea of doing BEE keeping scientifically. The programme ended with feedback and interaction session of the farmers with Dr. M. Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist and Head of the KVK Ri-Bhoi, ICAR RC NEH Umiam, Meghalaya with the distribution of certificate of participation to the participants for their future benefit.
