ICAR RC NEH celebrated National Science Day in collaboration with NERIE-NCERT

Today (28th Feb., 2015) National Science Day was commemorated by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya with the theme “Science for Nation Building” in collaboration with NERIE, NCERT, Shillong in the D. N. Borthakur Conference Hall of the institute. The programme was organized to sensitize the school students regarding the importance of science not only in agriculture development but also in our day-to- day life. Various programmes like essay competition, speech competition and laboratory visits to Biotech, Animal Health, Entomology and NICRA laboratories were arranged for successful observance of this day. More than 70 school students from seven different schools of Shillong participated in the programmes.

Inaugurating the Programme, the Chief Guest Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Res. Complex for NEH Region, Meghalaya highlighted the role of science in transforming society by citing various examples of scientific occurrences. Reminiscing the contributions made by Dr. J.C. Bose and Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, he expressed that due to the application of science our country has achieved the food-grain sufficiency with a production of 267 million tones adding about 7 million tonnes over the last year production feeding to a population of more than 1.2 billion. He advised the students to be laborious and curious to explore the secret of the nature through scientific approach.   

Prof. A. Sukumar, Principal, North East Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Shillong in his address remembered the scientific contributions of Dr. C.V. Raman and other eminent scientists who have given their valuable contributions for the sake of human welfare and stressed on the importance of science in our culture and society. He requested the students to go for learning of science for contributing for nation building rather than learning for leaving. He emphasized to have reasoning abilities for fact finding before applying the same in their day to day life.

Dr. N. S. Azad Thakur, Head, NRM Division emphasized that the day is being commemorated to inculcate the scientific temperament among the students through exposure to various research laboratories in different institutes. Dr. R. K. Singh, Head, Agril. Engg. in his welcome address advised the students to develop a scientific orientation in their attitude for the upliftment of the society and country as a whole. Extending the vote of thanks Dr. A.K. Tripathi, Head, Social Science narrated the importance of soil health card in the context of science in agriculture development. Mr. Mamur Ali, Mr. Umesh Kumar, Mr. D. Sharma and Mr. Ankur Deka from NERIE, NCERT, Shillong and Dr. B. K. Sethy, Dr. Krishnappa, R., Er. Arvind, Dr. Ramesh T., Mrs. M. Prabha Devi, Dr. C. Aochen from ICAR RC NEH, Umiam coordinated the programme. The programme was attended by ICAR scientists, research staffs thus making this day eventful.
