Promotion of Pulses in NEH States

A "Special Meeting on Promotion of Research and Development in Pulses for NEH States" was held at Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur for discussion and finalization of Programmes on Pulses for NEH states here today. 

Dr. N.P. Singh, Director, IIPR welcomed and suggested that a panel of 10-12 varieties of all the pulse crops to may be provided to ICAR centres in NEH states and CAU Imphal for organizing the demonstrations.

   

Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, Umiam, Barapani was the Chief Guest of the function. In his address, Dr Ngachan desired the need to promote pulses in all the NEH states as the entire NEH region is deficient in pulses by more than 50%.  He stressed upon the need to increase the cropping intensity of the region from 135 % to more than 200 % by involving pulses in the system. Larger quantity of the seed of already tested varieties suitable for NEH needs to be supplied. He suggested that all the new technologies available in pulses need to be promoted for Jhum improvement.

In the technical session, Joint Directors of ICAR centre of Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Basar and Meghalaya; Deputy Director of Research, CAU, Imphal; Scientists from AAU Shillongani and other AICRP centres in NEH region; representatives from State Department of Meghalaya  made a detailed presentation about the constraints and the need for the promotion of pulses in the region.

Dr. K.S. Varaprasad, Director, DOR, Hyderabad and Dr. P.K. Singh, PC (Linseed), Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, PC (MULLaRP) and Dr. I.P. Singh, PC (Pigeonpea) joined in formulation of action plan for the promotion of pulses and oilseeds in NEH region.
