National Technology day celebrated at ICAR NEH, Umiam

 

ICAR Research complex for NEH region (ICAR RC NEH), Umiam joined hands with Meghalaya State council of Science, Technology and Environment (MSSTE) to commemorate country wide “National Technology Day” on May 11th, 2016 in presence of school students (Class XI and XII) numbering 210 from various schools of Shillong. The students on this day visited research fields of Horticulture, Crop Production, Livestock farms (Pig, and Rabbit) and Biotechnology laboratories of the institute and interacted with scientists concerned to learn various technologies in terms of improved crop varieties and animal breeds developed by the institute. The students were exposed to various scientific aspects of realistic agricultural and horticultural crop production and animal production technologies. Students posed so many queries to scientists to clarify the challenges of modern agricultural technologies in present day of climate change, urbanization and deforestation. The day glorified with student motivation and inspiration to learn and practice modern agricultural technologies to feed the increasing population of North east India. On this day scientists highlighted the importance of agricultural science in day to day life of man and enlightened the aspiring students about perspective of agriculture and animal science as their career option.

National Technology Day is a very special day for demonstrating the prowess of Indian Technology since 1998 after performing nuclear test at Pokhran in Rajasthan by India. It is so significant day as country achieved huge technological advancement on this day. The first, indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” was test flown at Bangalore and successful test firing of the Trishul missile was performed on this day. As the day is important for Research scientists, engineers, planners and all others across the nation engaged in governance and nation building, so it’s humble motive of research institutes and state councils for science and technology to encourage science among school students. Shri A. S. Suting, Officer-on-special duty, from MSSTE and Dr. A K. Mohanty, Head of Social Sciences, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam mediated the program along with Scientists of Horticulture, Crop Production and Animal Science divisions.
