ICAR organized training cum awareness program on small scale integrated pig production at Namcheybong.

Small scale pig production is one of the most viable and profitable venture in hill ecosystem and its resource based scientific integration especially with fisheries, horticulture, floriculture and other crops leads to more sustainability and prosperity among the farmers. With this perception, ICAR Sikkim Centre is working as main torch bearer for technological intervention under the leadership of Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim; various input like medicine, feed supplement, vermibed, quality piglets and support for low cost small scale pig hosing system was provided.  A total 15 nos. of tribal    farmers, Namcheybong Gram Panchayat, East Sikkim participated in the programme.

   

Dr. Brijesh Kumar (Scientist, Animal Reproduction) inspected the low cost pig housing model of various beneficiaries, health and production status of pigs and newly born piglets.  During the programme various inputs related to scientific integrated pig farming have been distributed among the tribal farmers. The efforts of Sh. Phip Raj Subba, Sh. Kalu Hang Subba and Sh. Man Bahadur Subba were appreciated for their endeavor to integrate pig farming with fisheries, horticulture and floriculture along with proper composting of pig waste. Further, it was suggested that small scale pig farm must have water harvesting mechanism to manage water scarcity during winter and maintain the production.
