Awareness cum Training cum Exihibition  programme on PPV & FR Act-2001

 

ICAR, KVK, West Garo Hills organized one day  awareness- cum-training Programme on  Protection of Plants Varieties and Farmer’s Right was on 30th January,2016  at KVK campus under the sponsorship of PPV & FR Authority, Govt. of India, New Delhi. 89 nos. of farmers and from 7 villages of West Garo Hills participated in the programme.

Mr A.S. Singh, Prgogramme Coordinator, I/c  KVK, ICAR, West Garo Hills inaugurated the programme. He   welcome the participants and briefed them about the protection of plant variety and farmers’ rights. He also highlighted the fact that farmers had great opportunity for preservation of indigenous varieties of different crops and get the ownership.

   

Mr Arun kumar Singh, SMS (Soil Science) emphasized on the importance of farmers’ rights Act, 2001 and the role of farmers in preserving and conserving important germplasm. He told that West Garo Hills of Meghalaya is a biodiversity hotspot and has ample scope for protection of plant varieties to prevent bio-piracy in today’s era.

Mr. Tarun Kr. Das, SMS (Agril.Extension) coordinated the programme. He elaborately explained the procedure of registration, DUS testing, importance and benefits of protection of plant variety and farmers’ rights in local language.

An exhibition was also organized  where various  local  germplasms of rice, Pearl Millet, Pigeon pea, Maize, Indian mustard, Sesame, Sugarcane, Blackpapper, Turmeric , Ginger, Tomato, Brinjal, Okra, Cabbage, Potato, Onion and Garlic etc was exhibited.

The programme ended with vote of thanks by Dr. S Borah, Programme Assistant, KVK, ICAR, West Garo Hills.
