Farmers Sensitized on Climate Resilient Agricultural Technologies

To address the current variation in climate and its impact on agriculture and allied sectors, three days (29th-31st August, 2016) farmers’ awareness cum training programme on climate resilient technologies was organized at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar under National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) research project. The main objective of the programme was capacity building and livelihood improvement of resource poor farmers of the state. Around 53 farmers, mostly women, participated and actively involved in all the hands-on trainings including live demonstrations. Addressing the programme, Dr. R. Bhagawati, Joint Director, ICAR Basar, gave a brief overview of need of climate resilient technologies in the current era of climate change and urged farmers to adopt new technologies to adapt with the changing environment. During the programme, Dr. C.S. Raghav, PC, KVK West Siang, gave concise lecture on climate, weather and its significance in agri-allied sectors. Delivering lecture on climate change scenario of Arunachal Pradesh, Sh. K. Bhagawati (i/c Technical Officer, Agromet) gave summary on trend and impact of current climate change on socio-economic life of people of Arunachal Pradesh. He also briefed on the uniqueness of current climate change and role of sms service of Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa in alleviating its impact. Sh. Nirmal (Scientist, Agroforestry) made the farmer aware of significance of agroforestry and homestead gardening in increasing secondary income of farmers as well as in adaptation and mitigation of greenhouse gases. During the session, Dr. Rajesh Alone gave training on water harvesting technologies especially jalkund and its importance for life saving irrigation during dry season, livestock management and fishery development. Dr. Doni Jini coordinated the programme and gave training on low cost pig rearing system originated in Japan (Bokasi System) and gave practical steps to construct the housing with locally available materials. Focusing on the need of farmers, Sh. T. Angami (Scientist, Horticulture) gave detail instruction on off-season cultivation of vegetables using low cost playhouses. He also urged the farmers to obtain seed and planting materials considering the agro-climatic condition of the area and from certified government agencies. Dr Anup Chandra (Scientist, Entomology) briefed on techniques of Vermi-composting and its significance to develop resilience towards current changes. Sh. R. Das (Scientist, Aquaculture) gave lecture on fishery in changing climate and introduced new fish rearing low cost site-specific techniques. During the occasion, Sh. Amit Sen (SRF, NICRA) made the farmers aware of significance of soil health management under current scenario and urged them to get soil health cards from the respective KVKs. Also, some progressive farmers shared their experiences and gave valuable suggestions on the feedback forms provided at the end of the session.
